Abstract

Cleft lip and palate is one of the most common congenital maxillofacial anomalies in humans. They demand a long-term and interdisciplinary care, and the last stage of treatment is orthognathic surgery to correct skeletal deformity. The cleft patients show skeletal Class III pattern, however they have different skeletal and dental characteristics compared with non-cleft patients. Due to the diverse phenotype of cleft patients, individual approach is mandatory during pre-surgical and post-surgical orthodontic treatment. This brief review provides an overview of orthodontic strategy in cleft patients treated with orthognathic surgery, in the aspects of orthodontic planning, presurgical orthodontic care, and postsurgical orthodontic care.
